Wake Up, O Sleeper: From Darkness to Light in Christ
Hello, Harvest!
Have you ever found yourself going through the motions of faith without truly experiencing transformation? Many of us know about Jesus, but knowing about Him and truly knowing Him are two very different things. Paul's powerful words in Ephesians 5:14 call out to every believer: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
What Does It Mean to Be Asleep Spiritually?
Spiritual sleep isn't about physical rest—it's about living in a state of spiritual blindness while thinking we're awake. For many years, people can attend church, know Bible stories, and even serve in ministry while remaining spiritually asleep. They know about Jesus but haven't truly encountered Him as both Savior and Lord.
This spiritual slumber manifests in several ways:
- Making decisions without seeking God's guidance
- Living as if we are our own gods
- Avoiding deep engagement with Scripture
- Choosing darkness over light in our daily choices
The Difference Between Knowing About Jesus and Knowing Jesus
There's a profound difference between intellectual knowledge of Christ and intimate relationship with Him. Many people spend years in church settings, playing the part like actors in a play, without ever truly surrendering their lives to Jesus as Lord.
True knowledge of Jesus involves:
- Seeking His will in every decision
- Allowing the Holy Spirit deep into our hearts
- Recognizing Jesus as both Savior and Lord
- Living in obedience to His Word
Why Do We Choose Darkness Over Light?
John 3:19 reveals a sobering truth: "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness rather than light." Why would anyone choose darkness when light is available? The answer lies in our desire for control and our resistance to transformation.
When we remain in darkness, we can:
- Continue living as our own gods
- Avoid the discomfort of change
- Maintain the illusion of control over our lives
- Resist accountability to God's standards
The Enemy's Strategy to Keep Us Blind
Satan, the enemy of our souls, works tirelessly to keep us spiritually blind. He promotes the lie that we can be our own gods, leading to confusion and chaos in areas like identity, purpose, and morality. The result is widespread brokenness, pain, and despair.
We see evidence of this deception in:
- Rising rates of depression and suicide
- Confusion about fundamental truths
- Broken families and relationships
- A culture that rejects absolute truth
What Does It Mean to Be Light in the Lord?
Paul's anchor verse in Ephesians 5:8 provides hope: "At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." This transformation isn't about behavior modification—it's about identity change through Christ.
As children of light, we:
- Walk in love as Christ loved us
- Live as a sweet-smelling aroma to God
- Experience joy, hope, mercy, grace, and peace
- Find our identity as God's beloved children
How Do We Wake Up from Spiritual Sleep?
Awakening from spiritual slumber requires intentional steps toward the light. This isn't a one-time event but a daily surrender to Christ's lordship over every area of our lives.
Practical Steps to Spiritual Awakening:
- Make worship a priority in your life
- Engage with Scripture in community
- Seek God's guidance in all decisions
- Remember your baptism and what it represents
- Practice daily confession and repentance
The Sweet Aroma of a Transformed Life
When we walk in the light, our lives become "a fragrant offering to God"—a sweet-smelling aroma that pleases Him. This raises an important question: Does your life have a sweet smell to God? Are you living in a way that honors Him and reflects His character?
A life that pleases God is characterized by:
- Love that mirrors Christ's sacrificial love
- Obedience to God's Word
- Surrender of personal will to God's will
- Transformation that others can see
Don't Be Deceived by Empty Words
Paul warns us not to be deceived by empty words that contradict God's truth. In our culture, many voices promote darkness as light and call evil good. As believers, we must anchor ourselves in Scripture and resist the temptation to compromise biblical truth.
God's wrath is coming upon the disobedient—those who refuse to wake up and turn from darkness to light. This isn't meant to condemn but to warn and motivate us toward repentance and transformation.
You Are God's Beloved Child
The most beautiful truth in this message is that through Christ, we are God's beloved children. Our righteousness doesn't come from following a rule book but from knowing the Ruler—Jesus Christ. He is our transformation.
Baptism reminds us that we don't do anything to earn God's approval—we respond to His love because we are already approved by God. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, proving His love.
Life Application
This week, commit to truly waking up from any spiritual slumber in your life. Make worship and Scripture study non-negotiable priorities. Begin each day by asking God to guide your decisions rather than relying on your own understanding.
Ask yourself these challenging questions:
- Do I truly know Jesus, or do I just know about Him?
- Am I seeking God's will in my daily decisions?
- Does my life emit a sweet aroma to God?
- What areas of darkness am I still choosing over light?
- How can I live more fully as God's beloved child this week?
Remember, transformation is a daily process. God loves to welcome sinners to His table, and He offers washing and renewal through confession. Don't leave feeling beaten down—leave encouraged that God loves you and has a better life for you, one filled with wholeness, joy, and peace regardless of your circumstances.
Love and Peace,
